Moving DG Shipments via Air out of China

Time:2024/3/19Source:MAXWIN LOGISTICS LIMITED

Moving Dangerous Goods (DG) shipments out of mainland China via air can sometimes be quite challenging due to varying regulations and rules across different terminals and carriers. For this reason, many shippers have been advised to move DG cargoes from Hong Kong Airport (HKG) due to less stringent requirements.

However, there are several benefits to consider when moving DG shipments from mainland China, some of which I would like to highlight:

1. More competitive rates: With a greater number of terminals available, there is increased flexibility in choosing the most suitable one. Some popular terminals for DG shipments include PVG, HFE, CAN, SZX, CGO, among others. PVG and HFE are particularly recommended for their less strict regulations.

 2. Simplified workflow: DG shipments originating from mainland China can be transported to any major terminal within 2-4 days via inland trucking. Having only one Customs clearance to deal with streamlines the workflow, resulting in improved efficiency.

That being said, it requires expertise and adherence to certain basics to smoothly move a DG shipment out of mainland China. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Mandatory Air Safe Reports: These reports, issued by reputable testing institutes such as DGM and Shanghai Institute of Chemical Industry, are necessary. They clearly identify and list the UN Classification for the cargo in question. Terminals like SZX/CAN may also require MSDS

2. DG packaging protocol: It is important to follow the instructions stated in the Air Safe Reports, which specify the maximum quantity and weight each carton can hold. Each carton and/or pallet should be labeled with DG labels, including UN DG Classification, Cargo Aircraft Only Label, Shipper Claim, and Battery Label (if applicable).

3. Use an on-airport DG facility: Only an on-airport DG shipment facility can process such shipments. Therefore, it is essential to work with an agent who has access to such a facility.

4. Storage time at DG facility: Keep in mind that an on-airport DG facility usually allows a maximum of 48 hours of free storage. After this period, shipments need to either be flown out of the port or continue storing at the facility, incurring high costs. To avoid these charges, it is crucial to carefully manage the arrival time of shipments at the DG facility.

By partnering with the right agent, you can effectively move DG shipments by air from mainland China, benefiting from lower costs and faster transit times.
